How to get your pool company recommended by ChatGPT (and Google AI)
ChatGPT recommends the pool builders it can read about and cross-check: on their own websites, on Google and Yelp, in review volume, and on the lists and directories that name them. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode lean on pages that already rank and on Google Business Profile.
The short version: let the AI crawlers in, publish one page per service and per town with real projects and prices, build review volume that names the service and the town, get onto the lists assistants cite, and check the answers every month.
Where ChatGPT gets its list of pool builders
When a homeowner asks "who's the best pool builder in Milton, GA?", ChatGPT searches the web before it answers. The crawler behind that search is OAI-SearchBot, and OpenAI states that sites which opt out of it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers (OpenAI).
What it finds is mostly businesses' own websites. In BrightLocal's test of 800 local searches across 20 business types and 20 U.S. cities, 58% of ChatGPT's sources were the businesses' own sites, 27% were mentions on other sites and 15% were directories. Three Best Rated was the most cited directory (24% of directory sources), followed by Expertise (18%) and Tripadvisor (8%) (BrightLocal, Dec 12, 2024).
The data partners change over time. Peec's September 2026 analysis found ChatGPT using Yelp and Tripadvisor as licensed local data partners, Google Maps data collected through third parties, and business websites and Facebook pages (Peec AI, Sep 2026). Your own site and your profiles are the constants; the rest shifts.
- 58%
- of ChatGPT's sources in local searches were the businesses' own websites
- 35.6%
- of businesses already in Google's local top 20 were named by ChatGPT
- 133 vs 11
- average Google reviews of businesses surfaced by ChatGPT and Perplexity vs. those surfaced by neither
Where Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode get theirs
Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode: the page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet. Both features may run "query fan-out", several related searches across subtopics, to build one answer (Google Search Central, updated Dec 10, 2025). A pool page that answers the sub-questions (cost, timeline, towns served) gives the fan-out something to land on.
Ranking still feeds the answer. Semrush found that about 54% of the domains AI Mode cites also rank in Google's organic top 10 for the same query (Semrush, Jul 21, 2025), though Ahrefs found AI Overviews citing pages outside the top 10 more and more: only 37.9% of their citations came from top-10 pages in its March 2026 study (Ahrefs, Mar 2, 2026). For anything with a map, Google ranks Business Profiles on relevance, distance and prominence, and says more reviews and positive ratings can help prominence (Google Business Profile Help).
| Engine | Where it looks for local businesses | Fix first |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Its own search (OAI-SearchBot), business websites, Yelp and Tripadvisor, Google Maps data via third parties, directories such as Three Best Rated and Expertise | Allow OAI-SearchBot, claim Yelp, publish service and town pages |
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | Pages that rank in Google, plus Google Business Profile and Maps | Indexable pages that answer the question, a complete profile, reviews |
| All of them | Your website and the third-party pages that mention you | Plain-text facts: services, towns, prices, real projects |
Step 1: Let the AI crawlers read your site
Open yoursite.com/robots.txt. It should allow Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot. OpenAI runs separate crawlers for separate jobs: OAI-SearchBot decides whether you can appear in ChatGPT search, while GPTBot collects training data. Each setting is independent, so you can block GPTBot and still be found in ChatGPT search (OpenAI).
Then check the layer in front of your site. On July 1, 2025 Cloudflare announced it would block known AI crawlers by default and let site owners allow them case by case (MIT Technology Review, Jul 1, 2025). If your site runs through Cloudflare or another firewall, confirm the search crawlers above aren't being turned away.
Finally, put the facts in text. A gallery of 200 photos with no captions tells a crawler nothing; a caption that says "gunite pool with spillover spa, Milton, GA, 2025" tells it what, where and when.
Step 2: One page per service and per town
"A dedicated page for each service" ranked second among AI search visibility factors in Whitespark's 2026 survey of local search experts (Whitespark, Nov 6, 2025). For a pool builder, that means a separate page for each thing you sell and for each town you want to be named in.
- Service pages: custom gunite pools, pool renovation and resurfacing, spas, outdoor kitchens, pool houses.
- Town pages: Milton, Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Roswell, Cumming, wherever you actually build.
- On each page: what you build, where, a typical price range, a typical timeline, two or three real projects with the town named, and how to reach you.
A page like that answers the sub-questions an assistant fans out to: who builds pools in Milton, what a gunite pool costs there, how long it takes. If you're weighing what such a site costs to build, we broke down contractor website prices for 2026.
Step 3: Finish your Google Business Profile
Insites analyzed 10,000 U.S. local businesses across ChatGPT and Perplexity and compared those surfaced by both engines with those surfaced by neither. The gaps in basic profile hygiene were large (Insites, Aug 12, 2026):
| Signal | Surfaced by both | Surfaced by neither |
|---|---|---|
| Average Google reviews | 133.4 | 10.7 |
| Profile completeness | 77.8% | 31.5% |
| Photos present | 88.9% | 34.8% |
| Profile claimed | 91.5% | 38.2% |
Claim the profile, pick the exact primary category, list every service, set the service area to the towns you build in and add project photos as you finish them. None of it is new advice, yet in Insites' data about six in ten of the businesses that neither engine surfaced hadn't even claimed their profile.
Step 4: Build review volume, and make reviews specific
How many reviews does a pool builder need to get recommended?
There's no fixed number, but volume matters more than a perfect rating. Insites found review count was the strongest correlating factor in its data: businesses surfaced by both ChatGPT and Perplexity averaged 133.4 Google reviews, against 10.7 for those surfaced by neither. In Zarla's study, named businesses had a median of 444 Google reviews against 192 for the rest, with nearly the same rating, 4.9 vs 4.8 stars.
Ask every customer, at the moment the pool is filled, for a review that says what you built and where. "Saltwater gunite pool and spa in Alpharetta, finished on schedule" is something an assistant can match to a question; "Great job!" isn't. Reply to every review: Google notes that replies show customers you value their feedback (Google Business Profile Help).
Step 5: Get on the lists the assistants read
Presence on expert-curated best-of lists was the top-rated AI visibility factor in Whitespark's 2026 survey (Whitespark, Nov 6, 2025). Combined with what ChatGPT actually cites, that gives a short list:
- Yelp: claim the listing and keep it current; it's one of ChatGPT's licensed local data sources (Peec AI).
- Three Best Rated and Expertise: the two directories ChatGPT cited most in BrightLocal's study (BrightLocal).
- Trade associations and manufacturer dealer pages: industry domains rank third in Whitespark's list.
- Local press and community features: a newspaper piece or a chamber of commerce page counts as an unstructured citation.
- Every other directory you're on (BBB, Angi, Houzz): same name, address and phone, character for character.
Skip the shortcut of publishing your own "top 10 pool builders" list with your company at number one. Homeowners see through it, and it gives an assistant no independent reason to trust you.
Step 6: Put prices, timelines and facts in plain text
Assistants quote what is written down. When we asked ChatGPT on Oct 26, 2026 what an Atlanta remodeler should pay for a website and local SEO, it built a price table from small studios that publish their prices on their own pages (one run, so directional). A pool builder works the same way: a published starting range for a gunite pool, a typical build timeline and a list of towns served are facts an assistant can repeat. "Call for a quote" leaves it to quote someone else.
Write those facts the way the GEO research suggests: specific numbers, a named source when you cite one, a date. In the original GEO study, adding statistics, quotations and sources raised a page's visibility in generated answers by up to 40% in lab tests (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024).
Step 7: Check the answers every month
- Write down 10 to 20 questions your buyers ask: "best pool builder in Milton GA", "who builds custom pools near Alpharetta", "how much is an inground pool in Johns Creek", "is [your company] a good pool builder".
- Run each one several times a month in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode.
- Record who gets named and which sites are cited. The cited sites are your to-do list.
- Watch Google Analytics for visits tagged utm_source=chatgpt.com, which ChatGPT adds to its links (OpenAI Help Center).
- Ask every caller "how did you hear about us?".
If you'd rather not run it yourself, our free AI visibility report checks what Google, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity say about your company, and who they name instead.
What doesn't move the needle
- Special "AI" files or markup. Google says no special schema.org structured data or optimizations are needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode (Google Search Central).
- Blocking GPTBot and assuming you've left ChatGPT search, or the reverse. Training and search are separate crawlers (OpenAI).
- One screenshot as proof. Answers change; measure the share of answers that name you.
- Chasing a perfect star rating instead of volume. In Zarla's sample, named and unnamed businesses were 4.9 vs 4.8 stars.

Questions, answered.
How can my pool company get recommended by ChatGPT?
Allow OpenAI's search crawler (OAI-SearchBot) on your site. Publish one page per service and per town with real projects, price ranges and timelines. Complete your Google Business Profile and build reviews that mention the service and the town. Claim Yelp and get listed on Three Best Rated, Expertise and curated best-of lists. Then check the answers every month, because they change.
Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitor and not my pool company?
Usually because the competitor is easier to verify: more reviews, more mentions on lists and directories, and pages that state services and towns plainly. In Insites' study of 10,000 U.S. businesses (Aug 12, 2026), those surfaced by both ChatGPT and Perplexity averaged 133.4 Google reviews against 10.7 for those surfaced by neither.
How do I show up in Google AI Overviews as a pool builder?
Google says there are no extra requirements: the page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet (Google Search Central, updated Dec 10, 2025). Pages that answer the sub-questions, such as cost, timeline and towns served, and that already rank well have the best chance, along with a complete Google Business Profile.
Does schema markup get my pool company into ChatGPT?
Not on its own. Google says no special schema is needed for its AI features, though structured data should match the visible text. Use schema to describe your business clearly, and put the facts that matter, like services, towns and prices, in plain text on the page.
Do I need a separate website for AI search?
No. The same website serves Google and the AI assistants. What matters is that it states facts clearly enough to be quoted: what you build, where, for roughly how much and how long it takes, with real projects as proof.
